Talk Business' Clean & Green Segments with Roby Brock
Sponsored by Keep Arkansas Beautiful
LITTLE ROCK (Aug. 31, 2010) -
Keep Arkansas Beautiful has teamed up with Roby Brock's Talk Business program to share with Arkansans innovative and effective clean and green initiatives found around the state:
August 31, 2010 – One neighborhood in Arkansas may have the distinction as the highest award winning neighborhood in America. And it wasn't because the developer built the fanciest sub-division or sold the most houses. It was because of what the developer didn't do that made his landmark project worthy of accolades. Learn more in this week's Clean & Green segment.
August 25, 2010 – A variety of Arkansas towns and cities host farmers' markets throughout the growing season. Even though this year's crop of fresh farm vegetables is winding down, there's still plenty left on the vine. Learn more in this week's Clean & Green segment.
August 18, 2010 – Internships are intended to prepare you for a career path, but a unique program in central Little Rock is offering a different take on the ole college internship experience. C. J Duvall, a former Alltel executive, has hand-picked a number of interns to help work a massive 8,000 sq. ft. garden outside of Hoover United Methodist Church. Learn more about the garden in this week's Clean & Green segment.
August 11, 2010 – When you go to the Little Rock Zoo, your main quest is to see the animals. However, there's something else - actually more than 1,000 trees - that you might have overlooked. The zoo is aiming to change that. A federal grant has funded a new educational program at the zoo that will teach you more about Mother Nature. We explore in this week's Clean & Green segment.
July 20, 2010 – Find out how history, heritage and horticulture came together in an urban landscape along Main Street in this week's Clean & Green segment.
July 12, 2010 – What if by updating water heaters, air conditioning units or lighting systems you could take the savings from future energy bills and use that revenue stream to pay for the financing note for the new equipment? That's the basic concept - on a larger scale - for energy performance contracting. Learn more in this week's Clean & Green segment.
July 6, 2010 – Office building roof tops are one of the most ignored dead spaces in a city, but there is a solution. Green roofs can reduce energy consumption from the heat-island effect, minimize water run-off, and turn a stark surrounding into something peaceful and attractive. In downtown Little Rock, there is a showcase rooftop that puts this concept into high gear: the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Center and Library. Learn more in this week's Clean & Green segment.
June 29, 2010 – Little Rock's River Market District adds businesses on a regular basis. But the latest addition - a neighborhood pharmacy - will provide much more than just prescription medicine. Green Earth Pharmacy in the River Market Tower condominiums is the only pharmacy of its kind in the state. Check out this week's Clean & Green segment for more information about their prescription services and organic herbal supplements.
June 22, 2010 – Wanting to get rid of aluminum cans or a month's worth of magazine? Your computer or smart phone is not exactly the best recycle bin. But those devices could help you locate a recycle bin thanks to a couple of new tools and web sites. If you want to learn more about the recycling resources in your community, check out this week's Clean & Green segment for ideas.
June 15, 2010 – It's the season for farmers' markets across Arkansas and you'd be surprised at how many venues exist across the state. In all, more than 75 farmers' markets are recognized by state agricultural leaders. One of the biggest is in downtown Little Rock's River Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Learn more about Danny Carpenter of Carpenter's Produce, who helped found the River Market Farmer's Market.
June 1, 2010 – Twenty physicians and an even larger support staff started a crusade nearly five years ago when Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics began transitioning to a paperless office. Prior to the conversion, patient files were stacked inches thick with yellow and white note pages. Now, nearly everything is digital - even MRI's and X-rays. A typical file today contains only two pieces of paper: a billing charge slip and a worksheet. Learn more about what Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics is doing to "Go Green" in this week's Clean & Green segment.
May 25, 2010 – In February, we brought you a story about a modular home under construction in a Little Rock historic downtown neighborhood. As a follow up, we show you the completed house. The whole endeavor is a joint project between the Downtown Little Rock Community Development Corp. and the University of Arkansas' Fay Jones School of Architecture. Learn more in this week's Clean & Green segment.
May 17, 2010 – A new market in downtown North Little Rock has a great connection with Arkansas farmers for fresh-from-the-field products. In fact, one of the co-owners is a farmer himself. Teaming with a locally renowned chef, the market-restaurant enterprise is breathing more life into a resurgent downtown area. Learn more about Argenta Market and its role in the community in this Clean & Green segment.
May 10, 2010 – A 100-year old church in east Little Rock has weathered many storms - literally and figuratively. Duncan United Methodist is one of the oldest churches in the city and because of its age, it was in desperate need of an energy makeover. A group of dedicated volunteers rode to the rescue one recent stormy Saturday morning. Their efforts helped make Duncan Methodist cleaner, greener and leaner. Learn more in this week's Clean & Green segment.
May 3, 2010 – Earth Day 2010 The 7th annual Earth Day festival in downtown North Little Rock was a revival of sorts. Participants were re-energized about caring for the environment and wise use of the planet’s resources. Learn more about Arkansas' largest environmental event.
April 24, 2010 – Zoo: Poetry and the Planet The language of conservation through poetry is now permanently on display at the Little Rock Zoo along with all the beautiful and exotic creatures from around the world. Learn more in this week's Clean & Green segment.
April 18, 2010 - Waste Audit Recently, a group of business and civic leaders learned of an audit. No, it wasn’t how to avoid one after you have filed your taxes, but rather a waste audit. Learn more about ADEQ's Waste Audit program in this week's segment.
April 14, 2010 – Arbor Day Squeezed between the time change and the NCAA basketball tournament was a very important day to Arkansans: Arbor Day, a time to celebrate the planting of trees, a cherished resource in the natural state. Arbor Day is celebrated the third Monday in March. Learn more about Arkansas' Arbor Day activities in this Clean & Green segment.
April 11, 2010 – Chemical Firms Go Green Razor Chemical has been creating green and safe products at its plant for 17 years. When it was started, the owners of this small business saw a market need for environmentally friendly products to replace traditional solvents. Learn more in this week's segment.
March 28, 2010 - Tankless Water Heaters Besides never running out of hot water, there are a lot of reasons why these units are becoming more and more popular. They take up very little space, can be installed anywhere and use 40 percent less energy than traditional water heaters. Learn more in this week's Clean & Green segment.
March 14, 2010 – Going Vertical They're called Vertical Lofts and these striking houses were built to be as environmentally friendly as they are modern in design. Learn more in this week's segment.
March 7, 2010 – The Trash Man Cometh He calls himself a trash man but he is more than that. Along with his one-eyed dog Goldie, Neal Slater can be found every Saturday morning at the Fair Park drop-off recycle center next to the Little Rock Zoo. Learn more at this week's Clean & Green segment.
March 1, 2010 – Litter-Free Zones Students at Pike View Elementary in North Little Rock are on the case as litter scene investigators. Their school is a Litter-Free Zone, one of only three schools certified statewide through a new curriculum offered by the Keep ARkansas Beautiful Foundation and sponsored by a Walmart Foundation grant. Learn more about Litter-Free Zones in this week's segment.
March 10, 2010 – Trash Talking There's nothing like a little trash talking on a Saturday morning. This conversation has nothing to do with sports, however. Check out the latest edition of our Clean & Green segment.
March 3, 2010 – Spiritual Cleaning These church-goers are doing more than cleaning up their spiritual lives. They're making a difference in their drive to worship. Learn more about the Church of Rock Creek's clean up efforts in this week's segment.
