Spring Into Action with the Great American Cleanup
Each year, thousands of Arkansans improve the environmental quality of life across the state by volunteering in the national Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup in Arkansas.
The Great American Clean Up
The Great American Cleanup is the nation's largest community-improvement event. Activities include beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning shorelines and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers, and conducting educational programs.
Arkansas has historically been one of the nation's leaders in volunteerism during this three-month community-improvement campaign by organizing 300 events across the state that involve more than 10,000 volunteers and 45,00 hours of donated time.
Nationally, the Great American Cleanup involves an estimated 2.5 million people volunteering more than 8 million hours to clean, beautify and improve 16,000 communities during 30,000 events from coast to coast in all 50 states.
National Recognition for Cleanup Efforts
In fact, Arkansas' efforts during the Great American Cleanup have brought the state national recognition. In 2005, Pulaski County was chosen as one of five sites nationally to host a Honda Hybrid Showcase event where American Honda Motor Co. previewed its new environmentally efficient Accord Hybrid.
Morrilton was named one of nine national finalists in the Wrigley's "greenup" environmental project for its efforts to landscape the Morrilton High School campus.
